Testing the performance and quality of your ultrasonic cleaner – foil test

You can test the performance of your ultrasonic cleaner by means of a foil test. Here, we will explain the correct method of performing a foil test and how you can evaluate the result. The performance of your ultrasonic cleaner is determined by the intensity, strength and distribution of the cavitation in the fluid. Intensity, strength and distribution are made visible with the help of aluminium foil.

Before you start the foil test, you must make sure of the following:

  • That the ultrasonic cleaner is 2/3 filled with water;
  • That the correct dosage of cleaning concentrate is added to the water. Suitable cleaning concentrates include Tickopur R33, TR3 TR7 or Stammopur R and DR8;
  • That the water and concentrate mix is well-degassed (minimum of 10 min).

Additional requirements:

  • A wire frame that fits inside the ultrasonic tank;
  • Aluminium foil (domestic foil with a thickness of 10 μm to 25 μm).

Foil test procedure:

  • Lay the aluminium foil across the wire frame;
  • Place the wire frame with the aluminium foil into the ultrasonic cleaner;
  • Turn on the ultrasonic cleaner (without heating);
  • Turn off the ultrasonic cleaner after 60 seconds;
  • Remove the foil from the tank and allow it to dry.

If your ultrasonic cleaner is working effectively, the foil should be perforated.

Generalsonic GS3 foil test
Below is the result of a foil test carried out with a Generalsonic GS3. The upper part of the aluminium foil was not submerged in the fluid and is therefore not perforated. This test result indicates that this ultrasonic cleaner is performing well. This is an example of an ideal test result. It is similar to results that you will note if you use a Sonorex or an Elmasonic machine. We can state the following about the quality of this cleaner:

  • Intensity: good
  • Distribution: excellent
  • Strength: excellent

GeneralSonic GS3 test

 

Codyson CD-4820 foil test
Below is the result of a foil test carried out with a 2.5-litre Codyson cleaner. This test result indicates that this ultrasonic cleaner is performing well. You can clearly see that this cleaner has only a single vibration unit. We can state the following about the quality of this cleaner:

  • Intensity: reasonable
  • Distribution: average at best
  • Strength: reasonably good
